Inspiration for All the Senses: The Museums at Kulmbach Mönchshof
Always follow your nose ... and you will arrive at the Deutsches Gewürzmuseum (German Spice Museum) in Kulmbach. The historic Mönchshof also houses the Bayerisches Brauereimuseum (Bavarian Brewery Museum) and the Bayerisches Bäckereimuseum (Bavarian Bakery Museum) –in other words, everything you need for a proper “Brotzeit” snack.
Here you can follow the routes along which the valuable spices were transported in caravans from China to the Mediterranean and across the Alps to medieval Nuremberg. In the "Transparent Brewery", you can look over the master brewer's shoulder and taste the museum beer straight from the storage tank. For more than 600 years beer has been brewed on this site, where the Langheim Cistercian monastery once stood. The corner shop tells the story of how bakeries in the province sold many other everyday necessities as well as baked goods.
Out and About in Bamberg's Gardener's Quarter
Urban gardening has a long tradition in Bamberg! The green thumb is particularly noticeable in Bamberg's “Gärtnerey”, commonly known today as the gardeners' quarter. Gardening families have lived here for centuries, growing fruit, vegetables and specialities and selling them directly from their gardens. For centuries, Bamberg was famous for its precious liquorice, which was used to make "Bärendreck" (liquorice confections).
In a typical gardener's house from 1767, the Gärtner- und Häckermuseum (Gardener and Winegrower Museum) vividly illustrates how the inner-city vegetable and wine gardeners (known as "Häcker" in Franconian) lived and worked in the city.
