With the “Blue Rider” through the “Blue Land”

One of the most beautiful regions in Germany stretches between the Bavarian capital and the Alps. The green moraine landscape with its clear waters and impressive mountains inspired Ludwig Thoma to exclaim: "Just open your eyes; everything is beautiful!"

In the early 20th century, this region attracted young expressionists such as Emil Nolde and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. The artists of the "Blauer Reiter" ("Blue Rider") movement - Wassily Kandinsky, Gabriele Münter, Franz Marc, Alexej von Jawlensky and Heinrich Campendonk - were closely associated with the landscape.

... But nowhere else had I seen such a wealth of views combined as here in Murnau between lake and high mountains, between hilly country and moss.

Gabriele Münter in: Murnau and I, 1957

I saw unbelievably beautiful things in the mountains: these very low and slowly moving clouds, the dark purple forest, the dazzling white buildings, the deep roofs of the churches, the lush green foliage is still in front of my eyes.
