Maria Jarema (1908–1958), the ‘revolutionary commissar of abstraction’, was a woman of many talents. She was a sculptor and painter; she experimented with printmaking techniques, designed costumes and stage sets for dance and theatre, and was an actress. She was a member of the first Kraków Group (Grupa Krakowska), which had been founded by left-wing students at the city’s Academy of Fine Arts ; she wrote texts on art theory, spoke out in the Polish Parliament in support of women’s right to social self-determination, and penned manifestos against class society.

The exhibition at the Lenbachhaus is the first presentation of Jarema’s work in Germany. On display
are numerous paintings, monotypes, costumes, stage designs and writings.
