Renowned artists and writers, the largest naturally preserved moorland area in Central Europe, the "Blue Land" - the keywords for Murnau are numerous and promising. The museum in Murnau Castle can draw on this wealth and illustrates the special relationship between landscape, art and literary history. At the heart of the museum are the paintings, drawings and prints by Gabriele Münter as well as works by the artists of the "Neue Künstlervereinigung München" and the “Blaue Reiter” (including Marianne v. Werefkin, Alexej von Jawlensky, Wassily Kandinsky), who found their motifs and an expressionist style of painting here after the legendary summer of painting in 1908. Since 2023, the permanent Expressionist collection has been supplemented by the high-calibre permanent loan of the Blue Rider Collection of the KK Foundation Murnau under the title "The Blue Rider - A Homage". The world's only documentation is dedicated to the life and work of the writer and playwright Ödön v. Horváth, who lived in Murnau between 1923/24 and 1933 and wrote works such as "Kasimir and Karoline" and "Youth without God" here. The cultural history, which is closely intertwined with the town, can be experienced in the "Wunderkammer" and "Marktplatz" sections.
