Schloss Neuburg mit Schlossmuseum (Neuburg Castle with Castle Museum)
Neuburg, already an important settlement in the early Middle Ages, became the capital of the newly founded principality of Pfalz-Neuburg after the Landshut War of Succession in 1505. Its first regent Ottheinrich had the fortress on the eastern slope of the city hill extended in the Renaissance style from 1527. Between 1665 and 1670, it was given its Baroque east wing, whose round towers dominate the distant view. Unique features are the courtyard façade decorated in sgraffito technique and the two-storey castle chapel painted by Hans Bocksberger in 1543, the earliest Protestant church in Germany. The pure showrooms of the castle, such as the castle chapel, the knights' hall and the grottos, are complemented by the important exhibits of the Neuburg a. d. Donau Castle Museum, which is located on the upper floors of the east wing.
