Schloss Johannisburg (Johannisburg Castle)
Schloss Johannisburg (Johannisburg Castle), until 1803 the second residence of the Elector Bishops of Mainz, is located in the centre of Aschaffenburg on the banks of the Main. The enormous four-wing complex, built in 1605-1614 by the Strasbourg architect Georg Ridinger to replace the medieval castle, is one of the most important palace buildings of the German Renaissance. At the end of the 18th century, the interior was redesigned in a classicist style according to plans by Emanuel Joseph v. Herigoyen.
Highlights include the parament chamber with vestments from the former Mainz Domschatz (Cathedral treasure) as well as the princely living quarters with their preserved classicist furnishings. The palace church with its Renaissance altar, pulpit and portal sculptures by Hans Juncker (early 17th century) can also be visited. There is also the world's largest collection of architectural models made of cork: 45 amazingly detailed replicas, created by the court confectioner Carl May and his son Georg from 1792 onwards, reproduce the most famous ruins of Rome.
