Plassenburg (Plassenburg Castle)
Plassenburg Castle (Plassenburg Castle) towers mightily over the former royal seat and margraviate of Kulmbach. Commissioned by Georg Friedrich von Ansbach in 1559, Caspar Vischer built one of the most massive castles in Germany here, claiming that "no such fortress can be found in Germany". The four-winged complex has a defiant austerity on the outside, but on the inside it surprises with the arcades of the "Schöner Hof", one of the most important creations of the German Renaissance. Also worth seeing are the margrave's rooms with their remarkable vaults, portraits of rulers and the gilded baldachin bed of Margravine Maria (around 1630).
