The Neue Residenz Bamberg (New Residence Bamberg), one of the largest castles in Bavaria, was built from 1613 onwards and was the seat of the prince bishops of Bamberg until 1802. Under Prince-Bishop Lothar Franz von Schönborn, Johann Leonhard Dientzenhofer gave the building its present baroque appearance from 1695 to 1703. The palace was spared the destruction of war, so that the more than 40 state rooms with their stucco ceilings, floors, doors and furniture from the 18th century have been almost completely preserved. Melchior Steidl frescoed the Emperor's Hall with 16 larger-than-life portraits of emperors. In addition to the Elector's Rooms, the Prince-Bishop's Apartment and the Emperor's Rooms, a separate sequence of rooms commemorates King Otto I of Greece, who resided in Bamberg until 1862 after his abdication. The Rose Garden offers a charming view of the city.
