Staatsgalerie in der Neuen Residenz Bamberg (State Gallery in the New Residence Bamberg)
The Staatsgalerie in the New Residence Bamberg (State Gallery in the New Residence Bamberg) consists of two sections: the first shows masterpieces of late Gothic panel painting, which form an important ensemble of Bamberg, Franconian and Cologne painting, enriched by paintings by famous artists of the Dürer period (Michael Wolgemut, Hans Baldung Grien, Hans von Kulmbach, Hans Wolf, Lucas Cranach the Elder). Among them are major works from the Sammlung Ludwig (Ludwig collection), the famous collection of Old German painting purchased by King Ludwig I of Bavaria in 1827 (panels of the Heisterbach Altarpiece, Master of the Life of Mary, Master of St. Severin and others). The second section provides an overview of European Baroque painting with monumental gallery paintings by Johann Michael Bretschneider, works by the Rubens teacher Otto van Veen and the Rembrandt contemporary Jan Lievens, as well as Dutch landscape paintings and still lifes. A separate room is dedicated to the collection of the Bamberg prince-bishops: 40 paintings hung in several rows illustrate the collecting and presentation habits of the Baroque.
