Felsengarten Sanspareil und Morgenländischer Bau (Rock Garden Sanspareil and Oriental Building)
Margravine Wilhelmine characterised the Sanspareil rock garden in a letter: "Nature itself was the master builder." Indeed, natural bizarre rock formations in the beech grove of Sanspareil characterise the garden below Burg Zwernitz (Zwernitz castle), which was created in 1744. Small buildings, some of them made of wood, were added to the magnificent natural backdrop. Many of these fell into disrepair over time or were demolished in the 19th century. The rock theatre - a mixture of ruin and grotto - as well as the kitchen building and the Morgenländische Bau, which served as an Eremitage (Hermitage), have been preserved to this day. Its exterior, decorated with glass rivers and tufa stone, conveys a fairy-tale, oriental impression. Its interior, on the other hand, is only sparsely stuccoed, but has a special feature: The rooms are grouped around an inner courtyard in which an old beech tree towers - as the natural heart of the man-made building, so to speak. The sunken garden parterre between the buildings was reconstructed based on an engraving from 1748.
