Burg Zwernitz (Zwernitz castle)
Burg Zwernitz (Zwernitz castle), enthroned on a narrow rock, was first mentioned in documents in 1156 as the ancestral seat of the Walpoten family. After several changes of ownership, it fell to the Hohenzollerns in 1338 and to the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1810. Large parts of the late Romanesque castle have been preserved and can be recognised by the typical humpback ashlars. The half-timbered buildings of the lower castle are much younger. Like the buildings of the high castle, which dates back to 1550, they are from the post-medieval period, and a documentary in the high castle shows the history of the castle, its inhabitants and the village of Sanspareil. A permanent exhibition is dedicated to courtly hunting in the two margraviate duchies of Ansbach and Bayreuth in the 18th century, including original hunting weapons of the margraves and a collection of courtly hunting paintings.
