The building history of Schloss Linderhof (Linderhof Castle) can be summarised as follows: from forester's lodge to royal cottage to castle. From 1869, King Ludwig II had his father's former forester's cottage "rebuilt" step by step in the truest sense of the word, until finally a splendidly furnished pleasure palace in the style of the French 18th century came into being. It is the only major building project by Ludwig II that was completed during his lifetime, and the surroundings were also designed to reflect the spirit of French absolutism. According to plans by Carl Joseph von Effner, one of the most qualitative parks of the 19th century was finally created, combining elements of the French Baroque with the English landscape garden: terraces with water basins, geometric flowerbeds, a cascade with fountains meet a natural, irregularly designed park. This is enlivened by exotic buildings that reflect the oriental fashion of the time (Moroccan House, Moorish Kiosk) and Ludwig's fondness for Richard Wagner's operas. The most famous here is probably the "Venus Grotto" (Act 1 of "Tannhäuser"), an artificial stalactite cave with a lake and waterfall and, at the time, completely new electric lighting.
