Schloss Ehrenburg (Ehrenburg Castle), the former city residence of the Coburg dukes, today presents itself in 19th century garb when viewed from the castle square. Behind it lies a mighty complex that looks back on 450 years of history. Built in 1543 and extended in the Baroque style from 1690, it was thoroughly renovated between 1810 and 1841. The neo-Gothic façade was designed by the young Berlin architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel, and the living and social rooms were remodelled and sumptuously furnished in the classicist style by the Frenchman André Marie Renié-Grétry. The court church and the lavishly stuccoed "Riesensaal" are still preserved from the Baroque period. Two picture galleries with the Coburg dukes' collection of paintings and the numerous portraits, mainly from the 19th century, in the showrooms are remarkable. Queen Victoria's bedroom is a reminder of her frequent visits to Coburg.
