Gartenkunst-Museum Schloss Fantaisie (Garden Art Museum Fantaisie Castle)
Fantaisie Palace in Donndorf, about 5 km west of Bayreuth, was begun in 1761 and completed after 1763 by Duchess Elisabeth Friederike Sophie von Württemberg, the only child of the Bayreuth margrave couple Friedrich and Wilhelmine. In 1850, Duke Alexander von Württemberg had the building redesigned in the form it still has today. The palace lies within a charming park, which is characterised by design elements from three major stylistic phases of German garden art (Rococo, Empfindsamkeit phase, Historicism). In 2000, the first museum for garden history in Germany was opened here. In 18 themed rooms, the museum presents important aspects of the history of garden art using selected examples. Numerous originals from the collection of the Bavarian Palace Department, supplemented by loans from other museums and archives, illustrate the development of garden art from the 17th to the 19th century in southern Germany, primarily in Bavaria and Franconia. The banqueting hall on the Beletage of the palace with its rich stucco decoration ("White Hall") is integrated into the tour line.
