Built by King Ludwig II in 1868 high above his father's Schloss Hohenschwangau (Hohenschwangau Castle) in familiar surroundings and never completed, Schloss Neuschwanstein (Neuschwanstein Castle) was for him a monument to the culture and royalty of the Middle Ages, which he revered and wanted to emulate. Designed and furnished in medieval forms, but with state-of-the-art technology at the time, it is one of the world's most famous historicist buildings and a major symbol of German idealism. The interior is decorated with cycles of murals from Norse and chivalric legends. The Singers' Hall veneratingly quotes two halls of the Wartburg, and the Throne Hall, a cult room of rulership, is reminiscent of Byzantine and early Christian church rooms.
