Königliches Schloss Berchtesgaden mit Rehmuseum (Royal Berchtesgaden Castle with Rehmuseum)
The Royal Berchtesgaden Palace is characterised by a variety of different stylistic epochs: from Romanesque to Gothic, Baroque and Rococo. The high medieval origins are documented by the cloister and its late Romanesque sculptural decoration. After 1818, the former monastery served as a hunting lodge for the Wittelsbach dynasty. Crown Prince Rupprecht of Bavaria lived here with his family from 1922 to 1933 and had the rooms furnished with exhibits of Wittelsbach art. These include two altarpieces by Tilman Riemenschneider from Rothenburg o. d. Tauber as well as valuable hunting weapons and trophies, including the heaviest Bavarian stag antler weighing 18 kilograms. Precious furniture, exquisite porcelain and paintings by important artists, especially from the "Munich School", complete the interior. The view of the Watzmann from the Upper Rose Garden is considered the most beautiful in the entire valley. The Rehmuseum in the former stables displays the entire wildlife collection of Duke Albrecht of Bavaria (1905-1996) on around 700 m². Almost 5,000 exhibits present the results of his research, for which he received an honorary doctorate from the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich.
