Cuvilliés-Theater in der Residenz München (Cuvilliés Theater in the Munich Residence)
The Cuvilliés Theatre, one of the most important logentheatres of the 18th century, was built by order of Elector Max III Joseph of Bavaria according to the plans of François Cuvilliés the Elder from 1751 to 1753 and is considered a masterpiece of Southern German Rococo. It witnessed numerous magnificent productions of baroque operas, including the premiere of Mozart's "Idomeneo" in 1781. The building was destroyed during the Second World War. However, the box panelling, which had been removed from the building, was preserved and re-installed until 1958 in another location, in the so-called Apothekenstock at the Brunnenhof of the Munich Residenz. Thus, this total work of art of European rank can be experienced again today.
