Casino auf der Roseninsel (Casino on the Rose Island)
In 1853, King Maximilian II of Bavaria commissioned Peter Joseph Lenné to design a landscape park on the western shore of Lake Starnberg. The execution, which was to combine ornamental geometric and natural landscape design elements, was undertaken by Carl v. Effner. The construction of the palace, which had only begun in 1863, was put to an end by the king's early death in March 1864.The Rose Island with a small island villa, the "Casino", and the rose garden, also designed by Lenné, became one of the favourite stays of his son Ludwig II, who received selected guests there such as Tsarina Maria Alexandrovna, Richard Wagner and Empress Elisabeth of Austria. Built between 1851 and 1853, the casino with its Italian architectural motifs and Pompeian furnishings is a fine example of the reverence for antiquity of the time.
