If you always wanted to know what a mammoth hunt was like 80,000 years ago or how tools were made 20,000 years ago, the late Gothic Ducal Box in Kelheim is the place to go. The construction of the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal brought countless finds to light that prove the continuous settlement of the Altmühl Valley since the Neanderthals. In addition, models of the first houses in the region or a reconstructed 2600-year-old burial chamber bring the past to life. The museum focuses on Kelheim's great Celtic past with the important town of "Oppidum Alkimoennis"; the reconstruction of an originally almost 10 km long Celtic wall can even be visited in the museum's inner courtyard. The section "Kelheim - Town on the River" illuminates Kelheim's town history since the 13th century and shows how the location in the flood area between the Danube and the Altmühl shaped life in the medieval town.
