A medieval treasure chamber with objects made of silver, rock crystal and gold as well as precious illuminations is hidden in the former Abbey Chapter House. The centrepiece is the famous "Magdalen Altar" from the workshop of Lucas Cranach the Elder (c. 1525): magnificent panel paintings with life-size depictions of saints flanking the Resurrection of Christ. It is no coincidence that the medieval St. Peter and Alexander Abbey Treasure is one of the most important ensembles of its kind in Germany. The Stiftsmuseum (Abbey Museum) also houses other important exhibits on the subjects of archaeology, medieval and Renaissance art and Baroque sacred art. The settlement of the Main Valley from the earliest Stone Age to the early Middle Ages is presented in detail. On display are, among other things, the complete inventory of a cemetery from the Urnfield period, finds from the Roman border fort of Stockstadt and early medieval burial inventories from Franconian cemeteries in the immediate vicinity. Ecclesiastical art from the 13th to the 19th centuries is represented by panel paintings, sculptures - including a relief of the birth of Christ by Tilman Riemenschneider (c. 1510) -, paraments, liturgical utensils, architectural sculpture, bells and folk art.The preserved historical rooms also contribute to the special character of the Stiftsmuseum (Abbey Museum): the chapter house of the 12th/13th century, the "Paramentenraum" (Paraments Room) with its colourful stucco ceiling from 1723, the former Stiftskarzer (Abbey Carcass), the "Gothic Hall" (13th century), the Kanonikerzimmer (Canons' Room) and the new Kapitelsaal (Chapter Room), in which essential parts of the original furnishings from the time around 1620 have been preserved. The adjacent late Romanesque collegiate church with its famous cloister is testimony to the cultural and art historical importance of Aschaffenburg as a spiritual centre in the Middle Ages.
