Krippenmuseum (Nativity Museum)
Wood, bronze, pewter, bread dough, papier-mâché, pumpkins and so on... The materials used are as varied as the countries of origin: over 85 from all five continents. The largest collection of nativity scenes in northern Bavaria - comprising some 1500 pieces from the 17th to the 21st century - is housed in a half-timbered house dating from around 1735. The 450 nativity scenes on display illustrate how strongly the depiction of the Christmas event in folk art is influenced by the respective culture.
A special feature is a 125-year-old family nativity scene from Iglau in Bohemia, one of the few surviving examples of a centuries-old regional tradition. On a floor space of 1.30 x 6 m, about 430 hand-carved and painted figures made of lime wood cavort in front of a painted background, plus 35 castles and houses (Schulstr. 2).
