The Stadtmuseum Kaufbeuren (Kaufbeuren City Museum), one of the oldest museums in Bavarian Swabia, displays its rich collection on three floors of a historic old town building. The permanent exhibition illuminates the history of the free imperial city of Kaufbeuren. The collection of around 300 crucifixes from nine centuries and the stock of around 60 Protestant reverse glass paintings created in Kaufbeuren in the second half of the 18th century are impressive. Objects from the field of "Allgäu folk art", which have been in the museum since 1901, are also on display. A separate floor is dedicated to famous people of the town: Ludwig Ganghofer, the writer Sophie la Roche and her contemporary Christian Jakob Wagenseil.
