On Saturday 12 December 2026 at 3 pm, the Kaufbeuren Town Museum invites you to a guided tour of the current special exhibition ‘Heaven, Wood & Saints. The Weilheim School and the Beginnings of Bavarian Baroque Sculpture’.
From late June 2026 to late January 2027, the Kaufbeuren City Museum is hosting an exhibition in collaboration with the Weilheim City Museum. The exhibition ‘Heaven, Wood & Saints’ presents sculptures from workshops of the so-called Weilheim School, which produced famous sculptors of the early Bavarian Baroque period.
From the late 16th century onwards, the Bavarian town of Weilheim developed into a major centre of South German sculpture. The workshops based there and their artists are collectively referred to as the ‘Weilheim School’. Benefiting from the town’s location, its proximity to Munich and Augsburg, and the presence of numerous monasteries and churches as clients, highly productive workshops emerged in Weilheim that were capable of carrying out extensive decorative work for entire churches.
