RiesKraterMuseum (Museum Ries Meteorite Impact Crater)
The catastrophe happened 15 million years ago, and yet it continues to have an effect today. The RiesKraterMuseum (RiesKraterMuseum) explains how and why. The central theme is the formation and significance of impact craters and especially the Nördlinger Ries, which with its clearly recognisable circular shape is one of the most striking meteorite craters on Earth. Embedded in the larger context - our solar system, comets, asteroids, meteorites - the Ries meteorite impact and its local consequences, but also the special role of such impact events in the development of our planetary system are presented here in a vivid, multimedia way. The exhibition is crowned by impressive meteorite exhibits and even a 165 g moon rock sample from the Apollo 16 mission.
