Museum Werdenfels (Werdenfels Regional Museum)
The Werdenfels Museum - Garmisch-Partenkirchen District Museum presents the history and culture of the Werdenfels region over five floors in a 17th/18th century merchant and town house. The collection, which was founded in 1895 and is one of the most important of its kind in Bavaria, includes prehistoric and early historical finds as well as sacred objects, rural art and bourgeois and rural living culture. One section is dedicated to traditional costumes from the 18th to the 20th century, and the crafts typical of the region are also represented, with a Mittenwald violin-making workshop from around 1900 and a collection of models from a carving school. The masks in the carnival room are also carved and provide an overview of the long carnival tradition in this region.
