Jerusalem Panorama Kreuzigung Christi (Jerusalem Panorama Crucifixion of Christ)
"All-embracing panorama" - this is the translation of the word panorama. In the 19th century, this combination of monumental circular painting, architecture and stage design was a popular art form; today, Altötting is home to Germany's last surviving classical panorama. It is so unique that UNESCO put it on the list of cultural assets worthy of protection. The visitor stands on a podium in the middle of the huge room, surrounded all around by the circular painting. The distance to the canvas - 12 m - is bridged by three-dimensional reproductions of the terrain, a kind of sculptural continuation of the painting. The panorama was created in 1902/03 by the Munich history painter Gebhard Fugel with the collaboration of the Salzburg landscape painter Josef Krieger and other artists as well as the Munich builder Georg Völkl without a commission, i.e. at his own expense.
