The largest open-air museum in Upper Bavaria is located on a ridge between the Murnauer Moos and Lake Kochel. On its extensive grounds, it offers a comprehensive insight into the everyday rural life of the people of Upper Bavaria, their building culture and working world from the early modern period to the present day.More than 60 original buildings have been reconstructed here, complete with their furnishings. The spectrum ranges from large farms to craftsmen's and small farmers' estates, and a separate area takes visitors into the world of mountain pastures. A specially developed "house to discover" shows children how life was like in a smallholding 100 years ago.The buildings are surrounded by a cultural landscape maintained according to historical models, including gardens, forests and pastures with old breeds of animals - and a spectacular view of the mountains and lake.
