The "Antonius fire" (poisoning by ergot fungus in rye) was a feared and widespread disease of the Middle Ages. It was cured by the Order of the Antonites, which was also based in Memmingen from 1214 to 1562. In the rooms of their hospital, which was built in the late 15th century, some of which have been preserved unchanged, the Antonite Museum can combine the history of the order with the domestic and everyday history of a medieval hospital. The prevailing approach of the time, "healing through faith" and "faith through healing", also provides an insight into the self-image of people in the Middle Ages. Also located at the turn of the modern era and therefore in the right place in the Antonite House are the paintings by Bernhard Strigel (c. 1460-1528), the most famous scion of a Memmingen family of artists. Works by other family members and their contemporaries complement the collection of late Gothic art. At the same time, the Strigel Museum provides information about the social status and working methods of the artists at that time.
