Staatliche Münzsammlung München (State Coin Collection Munich)
An overview of the history of money of all epochs and countries is not possible with coins alone, and so the State Numismatic Collection also presents medals, early paper money, precious gems and cameos. Traditionally, the collections focus on antiquity (Greeks, Celts, Romans) and medallic studies, but it also has significant medieval holdings and a large modern collection of all countries, including Islamic states, the Far East and primitive money. The oldest coins come from Asia Minor and are around 2600 years old. Special coin furniture is also part of the collection. The museum has the most important European collection of courtly Japanese lacquer cabinets of the Edo period, which served as coin cabinets at court.
