Salzbergwerk mit Salzmuseum (Salt mine with salt museum)
Deep inside the Berchtesgaden Salt Mountain, a hidden world is waiting to be explored. The beginnings of salt mining in Berchtesgaden date back to the 12th century. For centuries, salt was the only source of income here besides timber. Up to 300 m below the valley floor, the salt is flushed out of the rock with water in "wet mining". Visitors take the mine train through a 600 m long tunnel into the "Kaiser Franz Sinkwerk", a large underground hall, and from here they reach a salt grotto via a slide. Another highlight is the trip by raft across the Spiegelsee, a salt lake more than 100 m long and 30 m wide. Display boards, exhibits and a film provide information about the indispensable life element salt and its mining.
