Olaf Gulbransson Museum Tegernsee
"I'll take Norway with me wherever I go," said Olaf Gulbransson (1873-1958) even in the last year of his life as he looked out over the Tegernsee valley. Born in Norway, he achieved international fame as an illustrator for the legendary Munich satirical magazine Simplicissimus, whose image he shaped for decades. In 1929, he settled in Tegernsee and acquired the traditional Schererhof. It was here that he created a large part of his work, the graphic quality of which is still impressive today.
The museum, built in Tegernsee in 1966 according to plans by Sep Ruf, displays a selection of Gulbransson's outstanding caricatures, his rare oil paintings and an extensive collection of his book illustrations and takes a look at the stages of his life and the contradictions in his biography. For while his political caricatures were still taking aim at the Nazi regime in 1933, he soon submitted to the limited room for manoeuvre and actively participated in the Nazi propaganda machinery through his collaboration on the now "assimilated" Simplicissmus.
