Marktmuseum Altmannstein (Market Museum Altmannstein)
The collection of the Marktmuseum (Market Museum), which is dedicated to regional specialities, ranges from 150-million-year-old dinosaur fossils to the popular drawings of children's author Lore Hummel. The listed "Hoferhaus" from the 17th/18th century houses exhibits on the geology of the Jurassic period as well as on prehistory and early history from the Hallstatt period to the early Middle Ages, with a focus on the everyday life of Roman soldiers at the Limes. Regional natural monuments such as the Bavaria beech and the history of the market with its districts are also included. In the section on crafts and trade, there are interesting facts about old crafts, the local Goerz stoneware and pottery factory and the marsh lime from the Schambach valley used in the restoration of Dresden's Frauenkirche. Popular piety is represented, among other things, by an altar by Georg Günther. A separate room is dedicated to the life and work of Johann Simon Mayr, born in Mendorf, who was one of the most famous opera composers around 1800, called "the father of Italian opera".
