Markgräfliches Opernhaus (Margravial Opera House)
The Margravial Opera House - a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2012 - is the creation of Margravine Wilhelmine von Bayreuth, who was herself a playwright, composer and actress and had also been the director of the Court Opera since 1737. Construction began in 1744 according to plans by Joseph Saint-Pierre. The interior was designed by Giuseppe Galli Bibiena of Bologna, the most important theatre architect of the time; details were executed by his son Carlo. Completed in 1748, the opera house was rarely used as a venue for festivities and performances, as heating and lighting proved problematic. For this very reason, however, the interior has been preserved intact with its colourfulness in muted shades of blue and green, and today it is an outstanding example of one of the few original theatre buildings of the 18th century to have survived.
