Geigenbaumuseum (Violin making museum)
Visitors to Mittenwald immediately notice that it is not just the sky that is full of violins. He encounters this instrument everywhere, as it is virtually the town's landmark. Since Matthias Klotz opened the first workshop here around 1685, the town quickly developed into a world-famous centre of violin making. The Geigenbaumuseum (Violin making museum) tells the story of this 300-year success story. It not only links the history of the craft and the history of the town, but also uses a complete workshop, historical films, listening and even smelling samples to paint a colourful picture of stringed instrument making. In addition to violins, violas and cellos, special attention is paid to Mittenwald zithers and guitars. A special feature is the high-quality and extensive collection of Mittenwald string instruments from the Baroque period.
