The fact that the Fuggers were pioneering not only in their commercial success but also in their ideas in social areas can be impressively demonstrated in the Fuggerei. In 1521, Jakob Fugger "the Rich" founded the social settlement named after him and one of the first in the world, which is still inhabited today. Four multimedia museums on the site are now dedicated to everyday life in the Fuggerei, its history and its inhabitants. Here, visitors learn what makes the settlement so unique and how life there has changed, especially in the last 70 years after the completely bombed-out houses were rebuilt. Residents talk about their lives in words and pictures and thus provide insights into this special community. What living conditions used to be like is shown in the only original dwelling still preserved, with reconstructed furniture and household effects from the 16th century. Throughout the settlement, information boards explain other facilities - from the church to the former infirmary - and many architectural details of the terraced house settlement, which was visionary for its time. There is also an original air raid shelter from 1943 on the site, which now documents the National Socialist and World War II periods in Augsburg, including the devastating air raids in February 1944 that destroyed 90% of the city centre.
