Fränkische Schweiz-Museum (Franconian Switzerland Museum)
Two steeply rising, striking rock towers above a complex of historic half-timbered houses from the 18th century: the "Judenhof", which houses the Fränkische Schweiz-Museum (Franconian Switzerland Museum), is a special place and a landmark of the region. In 43 rooms, the museum offers a wide-ranging overview of the Franconian Switzerland landscape. On display are artefacts from the history of the earth, archaeology, history, agriculture, traditional costumes, popular piety and crafts. Extraordinary fossils (such as a rare, well-preserved marine crocodile), evidence of human settlement since the Neanderthals, objects from the Middle Ages and the Thirty Years' War are exhibited here, as well as workshops of old trades or bridal crowns knitted from the finest gold wire typical of the region. A special feature is the original synagogue from the 18th century, which contains information about the Jewish calendar and the life of a Jewish rural community.
