Bayerischer Kunstgewerbeverein (Bavarian Arts and Crafts Association)
The Bayerischer Kunstgewerbeverein (Bavarian Arts and Crafts Association) was founded in 1851 to improve training in the crafts and to promote the quality of arts and crafts. For more than 170 years, the association has been dedicated to the care and promotion of arts and crafts in Bavaria. The association currently has over 450 members from all areas of arts and crafts.
Its many activities have included organising its own exhibitions and participating in the world exhibitions in London, Vienna, Paris and Chicago. In 1878, a clubhouse was built in Munich's Pfandhausstraße (now Pacellistraße). After being destroyed in the Second World War, it was rebuilt on the same site. Today, a shop and the Gallery of Applied Arts provide a lively forum for contemporary arts and crafts.
One of the main tasks of the Bayerischer Kunstgewerbeverein is to promote young talent. The BKV Prize for Young Arts and Crafts has been awarded annually since 2006. This honours works that demonstrate independent artistic design based on quality craftsmanship.
