The Neue Pinakothek (New Pinakothek) houses a unique collection of 19th century art that is appreciated by visitors from all over the world. As the first public museum in Europe to be dedicated exclusively to contemporary art, it was founded by King Ludwig I in the mid-19th century and today displays around 400 paintings and sculptures from Classicism to Art Nouveau. Among the special highlights are the paintings of German Romanticism and French Impressionism, for example by Caspar David Friedrich, Edouard Manet, Paul Cezanne and Vincent van Gogh. In addition, there are masterpieces by Jacques Louis David and Francisco Goya through Friedrich Overbeck, Adolph v. Menzel and Max Liebermann to Gustave Courbet, Claude Monet and Paul Gauguin. The museum is now at home in the gallery designed by Alexander von Branca and opened in 1981, after the original building was destroyed by bombs in 1944/45. During the temporary closure of the Neue Pinakothek (New Pinakoteca), a selection of masterpieces of 19th century art is on display on the ground floor of the Alte Pinakothek (East Wing).
