Museum "Hinter Gittern" (Museum "Behind bars")
Fortunately, whippings as "welcome" and "farewell" have not been used here for 200 years. The permanent exhibition "Behind Bars" in Kaisheim shows how the penal system in Bavaria has changed since the 19th century.
From 1816, the baroqueised buildings of the former Cistercian abbey served first as a forced labour institution, later as a penitentiary and today as a correctional institution. In four rooms of the "Kaisersaal wing", the exhibition provides an insight into everyday life in prison, the development and organisation of the penal system and the stages of a prisoner from admission to release, and finally also deals with the difficulties in regaining freedom.
