The Museum Georg Schäfer (Museum Georg Schäfer) presents what is probably the most important private collection of 19th century German-speaking art. With paintings and works on paper from the late 18th to the early 20th century, it offers a panorama of the various art movements from the late Rococo to the Classicists and Romantics to the Impressionists and Secessionists, and the quality of the collection is based on the combination of high-calibre individual works with groups of works by important artists. Carl Spitzweg is represented here with the world's largest collection of his works: 160 paintings and 110 drawings. There are also larger blocks of works by Adolph Menzel, Caspar David Friedrich, Georg Ferdinand Waldmüller, Wilhelm Leibl, Johann Sperl and Josef Wopfner as well as Max Liebermann and Max Slevogt, among others, and the collection is made accessible to the public in changing exhibitions.
