As one of the oldest dynasties, the Wittelsbach family is one of the great European noble families. The museum provides insights into the history of the family from its beginnings in the 12th century to the present day through room-sized displays (such as a walk-in family tree). The 112 years of the Kingdom of Bavaria from 1806 and the relationship between the monarchy and society are particularly illuminated, as are the Wittelsbach's building and art policies and their role in the age of mechanisation. The exhibition focuses on King Maximilian II, who had Schloss Hohenschwangau (Hohenschwangau Castle) converted into a summer residence, and his son, King Ludwig II, the creator of Schloss Neuschwanstein (Neuschwanstein Castle). The museum follows the history of the family beyond the end of the monarchy in 1918, through their fate in the Third Reich to the role of the Wittelsbach family in 21st century Bavaria.
