Kultur- und Militärmuseum (Culture and Military Museum)
The Kultur- und Military Museum (Kultur- und Military Museum) shows how closely social and military history are interwoven in Grafenwöhr, and not only in its name. Although the town has been repeatedly affected by war in the 650 years since it was founded, the changes of the 20th century with the founding of the military training area in 1908 and the shaping of everyday life in Grafenwöhr by German-American coexistence after 1945 are at the centre of the town history section. And so the century of the great wars is also the main theme of the military history collection. Bavaria's largest prisoner-of-war camp during the First World War, the Nazi armament mania, the stationing of US troops are just a few of the key points on 100 years of military history in Grafenwöhr. Oh yes, and has the GI Elvis, who was stationed here, already been mentioned? Recently, a separate permanent exhibition area has been dedicated to him. In addition to anecdotes about his manoeuvre stays and filmic eyewitness accounts, the museum now also displays rare collector's items such as posters, records and photos.
