Künstlerhaus Exter (Artist House Exter)

Julius Exter (1863-1939) was a co-founder of the "Munich Secession", an association of avant-garde painters at the turn of the century. In 1902 he bought the historic "Stricker" estate on Lake Chiemsee, converted it into an artist's residence and finally settled there in 1917. It was here that he developed his unmistakable style with its vital splendour of colour, which determined his further work and earned him the nickname "the prince of colour". Today, the painter's study and studio are used for the permanent presentation of his paintings. Around 100 other paintings by the artist can be seen in the Julius Exter Picture Gallery in the Augustinian Canons' Monastery of Herrenchiemsee.
