More than 2000 years ago, Manching was home to the largest Celtic settlement in Europe, whose size even surpassed that of medieval Cologne. The museum presents finds from over 100 years of archaeological excavations of this oppidum and allows visitors to experience the everyday life of the people at that time in a tangible way.The architecturally significant museum is divided into two areas. In the first, the finds from the Celtic city are honoured according to their outstanding, pan-European significance. Tools bear witness to highly specialised crafts and developed agriculture. Precious objects from the Mediterranean region document the far-reaching trade contacts. The "Boios sherd", one of the oldest written monuments in Central Europe, is unique. The second section is dedicated to the military camps built in southern Bavaria since 40 AD. The centrepiece here are two 15 m long military ships from the time of Emperor Trajan (98-117) from Oberstimm near Ingolstadt.
