Mining as a hands-on museum: In the adventure gallery of the Mining Museum Maffei Shafts, visitors become miners themselves.
The Maffei mine was one of the most important iron ore mines in Bavaria. Between 1906 and 1978, some 16 million tonnes of ore were mined here. The oldest winding towers of their kind in Bavaria are also part of the complex. During the tour, visitors feel as if they are underground - an overhead loader shovels ore away from the site with a loud roar, the mine fan hums. Those who dare may use the hammer drill themselves to drill the blast holes. Compressed air makes the heavy tool vibrate and gives a vivid impression of the strain on the miners. And an underground alarm is also simulated during the guided tours. An experience for children is a ride on the small train that runs around the mine site.
