The history of the Archaeological State Collection dates back to 1885 and has been inviting visitors on fascinating journeys back into the past of human existence ever since. Located right next to the English Garden and just 300 metres from the famous Eisbach wave, the central museum for archaeology in Bavaria is an entertaining and educational place that awakens curiosity and enthusiasm for the treasures of the past.
In the first-class state collection and eight branch museums, art and everyday artefacts, burial objects and treasures that shed light on Bavarian history and the people who lived here from its beginnings 250,000 years ago to the present day are made accessible to the public. Highlights in Munich include a 3,000-year-old dugout canoe from Roseninsel, the bog body from the Peiting area and an almost completely preserved wooden well shaft from Munich's Marienhof.
After almost eight years of general refurbishment, the museum building was reopened in 2024 and adapted to current standards, which include barrier-free access and an expansion of the area for special exhibitions.
