Soon after it was built, the Bad Reichenhall salt works was given the honorary title of "the most beautiful salt works in the world". It is definitely the only royal one, because King Ludwig I of Bavaria himself had it built after a devastating fire destroyed the town in 1834. The famous Bad Reichenhall brine springs emerge from the crevices of the mountain in the spring building under the Old Salt Works. On the one-hour guided tour through the underground building, visitors learn interesting facts about the history of brine extraction and salt production. Exhibits and models, films, information boards and diagrams show the technical changes in the production of evaporated salt. In the salt museum, visitors also learn about the way the salt works today.
