It is extremely modest, almost hidden away in the south wing of the Residenz Würzburg (Würzburg Residence), but the Martin von Wagner Museum could really pack a punch: After all, it is one of the most important university museums in Europe! Its extensive and high-quality holdings of antique and post-antique art represent six millennia of art and cultural history and have served students as illustrative material for art history studies since the end of the 18th century. The museum consists of two departments: The older section, the Collection of Classical Antiquities, impresses with the third largest collection of Greek ceramics in Germany, as well as clay figurines, glass, marble works and Etruscan and Egyptian antiquities. The Picture Gallery in the Modern Department presents German, Dutch and Italian paintings by renowned artists from the 14th to 20th centuries in eleven rooms, as well as sculptures by Tilman Riemenschneider, among others. The associated Graphic Arts Collection has around 30,000 drawings and prints, including the graphic works of Albrecht Dürer. The museum owes this universal collection in particular to a donation from Johann Martin von Wagner, a native of Würzburg, who had acquired numerous important works himself in Italy as art agent to the Bavarian King Ludwig (Ludwig I).
