Synagoge Altenkunstadt (Synagogue Altenkunstadt)
The former synagogue dates back to 1726 and was the cultural and religious centre of the Jewish community for over 200 years, which played a decisive role in shaping Altenkunstadt, especially in the 19th century. As a result of the pogrom night in 1938, the interior furnishings were destroyed; afterwards, the building was first used to house prisoners of war and later refugees and displaced persons. Today, the synagogue serves as a memorial and museum and houses a permanent exhibition on the 700-year history of the Jews in the upper Main valley. The focus is on cult objects as well as personal and everyday objects from the last 200 years.
