Höchstädt Palace is one of the outstanding monuments of the former principality of Palatinate-Neuburg. The mighty four-wing complex in late Renaissance style was built between 1589 and 1602 under Count Palatine Philipp Ludwig. The painting of the castle chapel with Protestant themes is an extremely rare example of this period in Bavaria and is one of the most beautiful testimonies to southern German Protestantism before the Counter-Reformation.A permanent exhibition in the castle provides information on the War of the Spanish Succession and the Battle of Höchstädt in 1704, which was significant in this context. It shows the struggle of the great powers for supremacy in Europe around 1700, when Bavaria's rise to world power was momentarily close. In addition to the political environment and the battle itself, the exhibition focuses on warfare in the 18th century in general, but also on the fate of the soldiers and the population.
